Contemporary Kitchen - Turramurra

The owners of this Turramurra kitchen are a busy young family of six. In the brief for their new kitchen, the island was to be the focal point for most activities, including food preparation, and activities, including food preparation, and also to provide seating for family and friends to gather around.

The kitchen design was to incorporate a large stove and double-door refrigerator as well as a generous amount of storage space for food and goods. The client wanted fresh and natural colours to make the kitchen a warm and inviting space.

“As the island benchtop will be used to prepare meals, we have integrated special bin drawers, a large access to use appliances such as the food processor,” says designer Dean Welsh. “Seating is situated on two sides of the island, making it more social, and is ideal for when the family is having breakfast.”

In the cooking zone, extra-deep benchtops and drawers below are features of the joinery on either side of the stove. A pantry is set into a nook adjacent to the main kitchen, which has extra-deep drawers and shelving to the ceiling. The walls into the pantry are clad in polyurethane, with the shelves inside finished in coloured laminate.

A range of special features have been included to enhance both the form and function of the kitchen. These include wall cabinets with Blum lift-up doors and coloured carcass internals in all cabinets visible from the living room to match the pantry shelves. A special place for trays is located above the fridge and in the pantry all base cabinets are made 800mm high to incorporate the Blum six-drawer split system.

“Timber veneer shelves set into the splashback added a special feature and a place for cherished keepsakes,” Dean explains. “The detail in the joinery includes shadowlines to the ceiling, hidden end panels and extra joinery in the living room to match the kitchen. The colours were selected to give a fresh, warm feel in the kitchen and are highlighted by the veneer shelves finished in spotted gum. To give a contemporary edge, the chalkboard was incorporated as a neat way for the busy family to write notes or shopping lists”.
