Modern Kitchen - Woolloomooloo
This stunning apartment is situated in the heart of Sydney, at the famous Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo Bay. This beautiful Edwardian structure is the longest timbered-piled wharf in the world and was completed in 1915.
The client wanted the design and feel of the apartment to recreate the original turn of the century warehouse state. The brief called for an industrial vibe to be created which would complement the original façade and common areas of the building to the new interior of the apartment.
As our client works from home in this small apartment (95 sqm) it was important the kitchen was designed to not over-shadow the living and working area’s, yet still be able to exhibit her style and the historical value of the building. Art of Kitchens also completed all custom-joinery in the bathroom, living room and bedroom.
The main objective of this kitchen design was to create a functional space that would complement the new fit out of the open plan apartment. We did not want the kitchen to detract from the original features; it was to quietly fit into its surrounding, while still being strong in its design.
Storage was a critical point in this design due to limited overhead space. This was resolved by running the overhead cupboards to the height of the ceiling along one side of the kitchen, merging with our custom made bookcase / storage unit that lends a hand to the kitchen overflow.
Limited space created a challenge when selecting appliances and other features for the kitchen. The 19th century meat hooks provide additional storage space and complement the hand-made tiled splash back.
The overall mix of old and new elements, organic and manufactured materials, hard and soft textures, create a cutting edge city space for both personal and professional needs.
