CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN – OAKLANDS
This Oaklands modern kitchen has been designed to fit seamlessly into this large contemporary home. With its stunning combination of materials and oversized appliances, this kitchen was designed for the owner’s love of cooking and entertaining.
Features such as a generous island bench and scullery along with the timber detail on the island, mirrored kickboards and LED strip lighting are subtle yet make the kitchen a focal point in this family home.
The clients needed a space that would not only be functional to cater for their love of cooking and entertaining but they wanted space that would tie into their large resort style property and be a focal point in this open plan home.
Whilst the space was vast and needed to accommodate their love for entertaining, it also needed to adapt to their day to day family needs. Cooking, preparing and cleaning needed to be easily accessible in this large space and zones needed to be created so that this family with two young adult children could work together or individually without feeling confined. There was also a need for plenty of storage to cater for the family’s individual and entertaining needs.
One of the biggest challenges for this project was to create a kitchen that was inviting in this spacious area. It needed to feel warm and suit the resort style home whilst not being overpowered by too many textures and materials.
As the clients love to entertain, it was important for all appliances to be large enough to cater for their guests, be easy to use and access for the day to day workings of the family. A decision was made by the designer to highlight the Wolf ovens and Sub-Zero fridge rather than hide them away. This was achieved by placing these appliances opposite the island and surrounding them with Aged Oak cabinetry. By doing this, the ovens and fridge would be easily accessible for everyone working in the kitchen. The large induction cooktop and wok burner sits along the right wall of the kitchen and needed to be tied in with the other appliances so a custom double exhaust range hood was designed and built.
A four metre island emphasises the vast proportion of the kitchen. This centerpiece is not only important to tie the kitchen in together but is also necessary as a clear space for food preparation, serving and entertaining. The subtle detail in the timber feature piece to the left of the island was created so that only one slab of stone was needed.
The use of mirror and LED strip lights around the island create the illusion that the cabinetry around the seating area is floating. LED strip lighting has also been used around the shelving on back wall to highlight the client’s ornaments.
